Project Overview

Upshoot, based at the Fisher Theatre in Bungay, is a local community theatre project that puts on two shows a year aimed at audiences of all ages in the local area and beyond.

The latter show of the year is often a crowd-pleasing, musical extravaganza, with the income from ticket sales serving as a primary source of funding for the group and for the theatre venue as a whole.

I was approached to design the advertising materials for the last two shows, originating artwork for the posters, banners and signage that would be displayed in and around the local area with a view to promote the shows and increase ticket sales.

The show title needed to take visual priority in the composition of the poster so I focussed on making this as eye-catching as possible, with lighting and texture effects.
The titular red windmill is the centrepiece of the design. A motion blur effect was added to the blades to represent the energy and boisterous nature of the show.
Several themed items were added to the design to hint towards plot points of the show.
Priority was given to the visual of the poster. The text and important show information was added to the bottom of the poster in a stylish ‘cabaret-esque’ font.
I wanted to give the title text a ‘billboard’ feel, and combined a retro style font with lighting and 3D texture effects to achieve this.
The colour scheme of the poster was a deliberate choice. Taking influence from movie posters and combining contrasting colours to draw attention.
The silhouetted figure was composed by tracing a character image with the pen tool in Photoshop and then applying a blur filter.
The poster makes use of several layers and blur effects to give it depth, with the dice (a central theme of the show) being featured most prominently in the foreground.
Once the original design was approved I was then able to create various layouts for the client's advertising requirements, including roller banners, outdoor signage and social media adverts.
Overall, the projects were a resounding success. I received some very positive feedback from the client and from the general public. Both shows sold out on over 80% of their performance dates and the client assured me the advertising materials I'd created were instrumental in achieving this.
